The 1971 and 1972 Dodge Demon were souped-up versions of the Dodge Dart with a 108-inch wheelbase, three inches shorter than other Dart models. They had a heavy-duty suspension, dual exhausts, and a Rallye instrument cluster. The Demons were available with a variety of engine options, including:

1971
Two Slant Six options with 198- or 225-cubic-inch displacement, or two V8s with 318- or 340-CID. The 340-CID V8 produced 275 horsepower and was paired with a three-speed manual transmission.

1972
The 340-cubic inch four-barrel engine produced 275 horsepower in 1971, but by 1972 the power number dropped to 240 due to a change in power rating, smaller valves, and a drop in compression. The Demon also had a 230-horsepower 318-cubic inch V8 engine option.

The 340 was the only engine choice for the Demon 340 for both of its production years. It was rated at 275 gross hp with a 10.3:1 compression ratio in 1971 and 240 net hp with an 8.5:1 compression ratio for 1972. Four-wheel drum brakes were standard.
